Dell Technologies Innovations for Modern Applications Infrastructure

Detroit, MI, October 24, 2022 — At Dell, we’re committed to driving breakthrough innovation through modern application software approaches. There are three main areas where we are investing today to make this happen for our customers: add container support, accelerate your DevOps practice, and create multi-cloud consistency.

Add container support

Dell is committed to driving a strong ecosystem of partnerships with the major providers of Kubernetes, and recently announced two developments. We expanded our strategic relationship with Red Hat with three solutions for OpenShift. We deepened our strategic relationship with VMware with two recent solutions including a managed solution for VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid services, and Tanzu for Kubernetes Operations on VxRail. In support of a robust ecosystem of Kubernetes solutions we also have solutions today for: Amazon EKS Anywhere, Google Anthos, Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service, and SUSE Rancher. These solutions include options for both bare-metal and virtualized deployments, as well as a range of hosting configurations. We have created a level playing field so you can choose your preferred stack.

Cloud-native applications need persistent storage, and Dell was recently named a Leader in the 2022 GigaOm Radar Report for Enterprise Kubernetes Data Storage. “Dell’s Container Storage Modules are industry-leading extensions to CSI enabling advanced data services for Kubernetes-based environments,” the report states. “The effort and speed that Dell is putting into adding capabilities to its portfolio is notable.” Dell’s Container Storage Modules (CSM) amplify the benefits of our primary storage arrays, providing a simple, consistent, integrated, and automated experience for enterprise storage and cloud-native stateful applications. Visit the Dell CSM information on Github for all CSM Modules, including some new features recently announced as part of our CSM 1.4 release.

Last, but certainly not least, many organizations want to get away from forecasting three to five years out and making a large up-front capital outlay for IT resources – especially for new applications. Dell has many flexible financial options that enable you to determine the best way align payment with consumption. Usage-based pricing provides relief from paying for over-provisioned resources. On- demand scalability ensures that you have extra capacity available at a moment’s notice. Subscriptionterms allow you to pay-as-you-go for IT resources. These all add up to tremendous CapEx vs OpEx flexibility.

Accelerate your DevOps practice

New software architectures must be supported by new operational processes. Dell Technologies and our partners have proven expertise with specific services around containers and Infrastructure-as-Code to help you establish a DevOps practice. A key tenet of DevOps is automation. We’ve created a standardized set of RESTful APIs that enable software control of our products. On top of those we have written specific integrations with common tooling frameworks such as Ansible, Terraform, ServiceNow and others. Our unique CSM plug-ins automate functionality like application mobility, security, observability, and more. We post all this software in online repositories like Github and our own portal, developer.dell.com.

Modern apps are becoming business critical. DevOps teams must provide a production-ready environment that meets the service levels expected by customers, partners, and employees. Dell is

releasing this week a new version of PowerProtect Data Manager which is an enterprise-grade solution that was developed in collaboration with the Velero open source community. It protects both virtualized and containerized applications, as well as the infrastructure that runs them to provide business continuity and disaster recovery for modern applications. Protecting your modern apps must include protecting your operations from ransomware. Cyber Vault and Cyber Recovery are a perfect addition to your cloud-native environment. When it comes to enabling DevOps in your organization, Dell has the expertise, integrations, and tools that enable you to pragmatically evolve your approach starting today.

Practicing what we preach

We have put this strategy in place to modernize our own operations. We use the products and practices that we advocate for our customers for our own operations. We have seen tremendous success from our own modernization efforts within Dell IT. For example, according to Jaynene Hapanowicz, Senior Vice President of Technology Transformation and Services Development for Dell Digital. “We have cracked the code for a world-class developer experience, freeing our developers to spend 70-75 percent of their time writing functional code.”

Dell has been actively involved in the Linux Foundation for over a decade. In 2017 Dell donated 125,000 lines of code to the LF to create the EdgeX foundry, an open framework for IoT and edge computing. Dell is a founding member of both the Open Programmable Infrastructure and Open HPC projects as well as members of the CNCF, OpenSSF, Anuket and the Yocto projects
